This is, in my opinion, an important book that takes the reader deep into Iranian culture and history in relation to women's rights, shining a revealing light on the struggle by brave women (vieled or not) to gain equal rights.Reading this book, I learned s great deal about the Islamic Revolution and I gained new respect for both sides in this struggle: whether women in Iran wear the chador or not, they want to remove the gender bias from Sharia laws so that Islamic culture can benefit from the gifts and talents of both men and women.This book was a joy to read. I highly recommend it.

Grace is the word that comes to mind, when I think of my experience of reading the Jewels of Allah! This is an elegantly written book for every woman and every man to read! Dr. Nina Ansary is a brilliant author of a rare "jewel", on history of amazing Iranian women that has never been revealed before! Dr. Ansary is a catalyst whose tremendous research has created a masterpiece, greatly documented, brave work that must be a part of high school and university curriculum everywhere.Her boundless generosity:100% of the proceeds of this book is donated to charities supporting women in Iran.

Well written but not so academic that a "lay person" gets lost in the language of academia. Even a non scholar can follow the author. I enjoyed reading Jewels of Allah from start to finish.

Amazing book.

I am not a professional at anything. My opinion comes from my heart. I pray Dr. Ansary has many more books to write. I believe we need to have more of the kind of work she has done in Jewels of Allah. I had to take my time reading so as to take in every aspect of the women of Iran and the triumphs of their spirit. God Bless you Dr. Ansary. I pray your voice is heard for many years. Thank you also for the gift of my autographed book.

Well written easy reading and informative still reading when my family hasn't borrowed to read and look through. I'm very much enjoying this book & it's well worth having. I think it would be a good book in school libraries for its historical content.

Excellent analysis of Irani modern history.

I found her book compelling. She writes to educate those uninformed of the magnitude of problem in a society we judge yet know nothing about. I realize as a writer about the same subject I may be prejudiced. For those interesting in learning this is a good book.

Kok-Kwang Phoon is a distinguished professor and head of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, National University of Singapore, and past president of the Geotechnical Society of Singapore. He is the recipient of numerous research awards, including the ASCE Norman Medal in 2005 and the NUS Outstanding Researcher Award in 2010. He is the founding editor of Georisk and chair of TC304 (Engineering Practice of Risk Assessment and Management) in the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering. Jianye Ching is a professor in the Department of Civil Engineering, National Taiwan University. His main research interests include geotechnical reliability analysis and reliability-based design, basic uncertainties in soil properties, random fields and spatial variability, and geotechnical design codes. He is the secretary of TC304 (risk) in the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering. I wish I knew how to unhinge my mind like Lockwood to free it from literal, confining prose-thinking. Her poetry steps into a temple of sorts, a special place of worship for the imagination. Her poems are like Kandinsky's paintings: a lot of non-sense is going on and on the surface it looks like a mass of confusion and can of worms jerked open by a predator but you don't care because you've having such a good time watching the show from the sidelines, where some character from Twin Peaks is giving you a buzz cut. (Not to say her stuff is surreal.) She takes personification to the extreme; for example she personifies "The Dunk" and gives him/her a rich, full life. Soon, you expect The Dunk to get married, buy a house, and produce little baby Durants. You wonder if she smokes crack or nutmeg, something healthy I'm sure, to escape the rational, lineal mind. And like a Kandinsky painting, somehow it resolves into wholesome goodness. Nobody writes like her. With time, I wonder if she'll mellow into a Joseph Ceravolo. Agree/Disagree? I enjoyed this collection of poems - more so, even, than "Balloon Pop Outlaw Black": the more focused writing-style in this collection appealed to me. Interspersed with Lockwood's wonderful abstract imagery, I enjoyed the contrast between the playful and the dark on the subject of bodies and borders. Though some reviews complain of the sexually-exlipicit and raunchiness in the poems: I love it, and I think Lockwood really handles the content well. Particular standouts: "List of Cross-Dressing Soldiers," "Rape Joke," "The Father and Mother of American Tit-Pics," "The Hypno-Domme Speaks, and Speaks and Speaks," "Revealing Nature Photographs," "The Fake Tears of Shirley Temple," "Nessie Wants to Watch Herself Doing It," "Is Your Country a He or a She in Your Mouth," "The Whole World Gets Together and Gangbangs a Deer," and "He Marries the Stuffed-Owl Exhibit at the Indiana Welcome Center."

Poetry-wise, I am lost. Sometimes I still try to read it, but usually give up after the first few lines. I'm not the only one, I'm sure.Once upon a time in Ohio -- this is true -- I sat on the floor in a student-jammed room just a few arms' lengths from Allen Ginsberg. And nothing he said connected with me. Nothing. My major take-away was that Mr. Ginsburg, before he sat down, unbuckled his belt, unbuttoned his jeans, and unzipped his fly. Was he symbolically getting naked in front of the crowd or were his jeans too tight? I don't know! But I'm sitting in the midst of all this High Literary Seriousness not getting it, feeling irrelevant, looking at Ginsberg's belt buckle flopped over and hanging in space. That pretty well summarizes my experience with poetry.Patricia Lockwood, however, is the exception. I never read the NY Times anymore, but I did on that Sunday when Lichtenstein's piece on her appeared. She seemed to be a very intriguing person. Her whole family, her dad the priest, the sight-impaired husband who champions her, her brother the Marine, the mom who sticks up for her -- intriguing people, and a real family from what I could discern.So I bought her book, Motherland Fatherland Homelandsexuals. And guess what: there is still a lot I don't understand. But I am here to tell you that the woman truly has it. Don't know exactly what 'it' is, don't know what to call it, but she's got it big time.Her writing shape-shifts. The inanimate comes alive and speaks. Land becomes personified and sexual. I often had to wonder, who or what is saying this? A lot of images and phrases re-appear from poem to poem. "Between two legs." Hawks. Fire and burning. An igniting match becomes the eye seeing the flame or vice versa. Geography (!) is a recurring theme. Gender crosses back and forth. Roundness and round objects -- her mouth, the earth, a round lens, the moon, ball dunking -- keep showing up. Innocence ruined, trust betrayed. Vitality. It's all connected.Rape Joke, probably her best known poem, has hard narrative power. Nothing funny about it, but plenty of irony. Rape Joke is lava that has skinned over and turned cool on the outside but is still molten inside.In the one before it, Why Haven't You Written, the last lines hit me with a silent thud, because I know I've been there. Assuming I got it right. Not sure if I got any of this right.Anyway, this is getting too long, but I just want to say her work is worth it. The reviewer here who said that her work is "butterflies flying" compared to butterflies pinned? That's a good way of putting it.What I would really like to read are the one or more novels she wrote that never got published, the ones she left in the woods, bear-like. Wish she would dig those up, go indie, just as is, like now. Go the New York route, it'll take forever (and they way they've handled inventory of her books … don't get me started). Right now, she's got 30k Twitter followers, according to the Times piece. Wow. For a poet to do that -- a poet living in Kansas! -- is wildly impressive.

I did not love Lockwood's highly referential and metatextual poetry at first: the layers of puns and odd references. Yet the changing landscape of social media fluent poetry has led me to really appreciate Lockwood's highly colloquial poetry because her work demands attention and engagement, rewards re-reading, and resists conventional turns of phrase and idea. This collection was seemingly made famous by the spreading of "Rape Joke," which contains Lockwood's more focus on contemporary concerns and seems made to be viral, but her other poetry is far more slippery, and this is clearly on display here. If you were hesitant a few years ago or thought that this collection was too-clever-by-half, I strongly suggest a re-read these few years ago. I found it very rewarding.

Everything is so funny and clever that you're really jealous that you didn't write it yourself until the full emotional weight of everything hits you and then you're just thankful that Lockwood is steering this ship because she's a master at it

He has been the editor of Liberty magazine and Shabbat Shalom magazine. Clifford, born in Albany, New York, has an apparent passion for writing and studying, and he is a lover of philosophy. These days Clifford describes his life as "very boring," but in his younger days, CliffordÂ’s life was anything but "boring." Nicknamed "Heckle" by friends at the University of Florida for the colorful verbal assaults he leveled against a certain street preacher, Clifford was the poster boy for rebellion and philosophical skepticism. Clifford has a bachelorÂ’s degree from the University of Florida and a masterÂ’s degree from John Hopkins University. He is married to Kimberly and has two children, Zachary and Hannah. With "Graffiti In The Holy of Holies" written as a rebuttal to former Adventist Dale Ratzlaff's "The Cultic Doctrine of Seventh-day Adventists", Clifford Goldstein has produced another apologetic follow-up to his "1844 Made Simple" that powerfully exposes the continually rehashed arguments, recycled year after year by critics of Adventist doctrine. Critics that give little or no consideration of Adventisms indepth and scholarly response to such authors and former members like Desmond Ford, Walter Rea, Ronald Numbers and others. During the 1980s and 90s, the Seventh-day Adventist church published seven volumes of works entitled "Daniel and Revelation Committee Series", prepared by the best of its theologians. Mr. Goldstein comments on how modern critics don't even bother to refute these rebuttals, even ignoring them for the most part. What are critics of Adventism so afraid of? Could it be that their arguments don't stand up under real contextual scrutiny? That according to numerous biblical translations, non-Adventist scholars, both Christian and Jewish, came to many of the same Adventist conclusions about interpreting a day for a year in prophecy? The 70 weeks of Daniel 9 being really 490 years "cut off" from the 2300 days/years of Daniel 8:14? The many Bible translations that, along with Adventists, interpret the heavenly sanctuary in Daniel 8:14 as being "cleansed?" Or maybe it's the historically proven fact that Daniel's vision of the "little horn", in no way could be refering to Antiochus Epiphanes, who never proved to be "exceeding great" by any stretch of the imagination.Of course there is the whole Ellen G. White being a "plagiarist" and "false prophet" thing continually being rehashed as well. Over 100 years of rehashing since the days of D.M. Canright for that matter. Let's just quote one of this so called "false prophet's" many sayings as an example:"Grace is unmerited favor, and the believer is justified without any merit of his own, without any claim to offer to God. He is justified through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, who stands in the courts of heaven as the sinner's substitute and surety." Selected Messages Book 1, p. 398.Sounds like a pretty "false" representation of God's saving Grace if there ever was one don't you think? Is that what those Adventists are teaching the Bible really says? And that's just one of many E.G. White sayings you never hear quoted by her critics as Mr Goldstein so ably points out.But then again, her critics sometimes seemingly contradict themselves as Brother Goldstein points out, like Mr. Ratzlaff's own reflection of Ellen White's influence in the Adventist church. In his above mentioned 380 page book, he states on page 351, "To her credit, unlike many 'prophets' of her day, her change in doctrine was usually toward mainstream Christianity." And the scholar that penned the forward to Mr. Ratzlaff's book, Kenneth Richard Samples is even quoted as saying, "In fact, Ellen G. White seemed to play a significant role in helping the Adventist church move toward theological orthodoxy." Foreward [7]. Well isn't that what true prophets are supposed to do? Shouldn't we know them by their fruits?This brings us to one of Mr. Goldstein's final remarks quoted from p. 172 of "Graffiti In The Holy of Holies": "These are fascinating admissions, fraught with conclusions that Brother Dale doesn't work through. In his sentence he places quote marks around the word "prophets," the implication being that he questions her prophetic ministry. Fair enough. But how many other modern day "prophets" have moved their churches toward "mainstream Christianity," as Brother Dale says Ellen White did? Has Sun Myung Moon, leader of the Unification Church? Or Joseph Smith of the Mormons? Or Mary Baker Eddy of Christian Science? Please! All of these prophets, without equivocation or exception, have led their people away from mainstream Christianity, because they are all false prophets. And yet Brother Dale admits that Ellen White, one of these "prophets," moved the church toward the mainstream, or as Kenneth Samples says, toward "theological orthodoxy." That's kind of a strange thing for someone to do, who (according to Brother Dale) practiced deception, taught false doctrine, and wrote against the gospel."If one truly believe's in hearing the argument from both sides, something even the secular courts of the world practice, then why not read this book from the pen of Clifford Goldstein? Why not read the many rebuttals that Adventists have published for decades for that matter? Many of which you'll find in my list of reviews or the Adventist Book Center website. Most are even right here at Amazon.com. Then one can truly consider themselves well read and informed. It might even change some of those negative opinions of Seventh-day Adventist beliefs many of you, even former members have been duped into believing. We're not afraid of something we really can't denounce are we?

One of the most interesting points brought out in this book is the fact that Ratzlaff and others are all basically just asserting the same arguments made by Canright and Ford, etc. There's nothing new about their arguments. Most of the anti-Adventist critics are essentially neo-Canrights; there is truly nothing new under the sun. The problem is that Canright's arguments and the anti-Sanctuary doctrine arguments have been extensively addressed in Adventist literature. But yet the critics never interact with these extensive responses. They pretend as if their charges are unanswered. Ironically, Ratzlaff takes this "no-law" theory espoused by Canright as a basis to reject the 4th Commandment. Yet when one analyzes the founding Protestant creeds, virtually all of them acknowledged the continued existence and binding nature of the moral law. So, when Ratzlaff and these others adopt their no-law theory, they are in essence rejecting the foundational predicates of all of Protestantism. Ratzlaff and others all reject the year-day principle in prophetic interpretation, failing to acknowledge that this has been a tried-and-true method for a 1,000 years being held as axiomatic by the founding fathers of Protestantism. The only way you get around the termination of the 2,300 day prophecy being in the mid 19th Century is to reject the year-day principle. For a putative Protestant to jettison the year-day principle is tantamount to chopping down the pillars of the foundation of Protestantism. Almost all Protestant reformers identified the little horn of Daniel as the Papacy. So the Adventists, as much as they may be reviled, are simply sticking to the original Protestant beliefs. Their 1844 doctrine is simply the logical continuation of the prophetic interpretative principles that pinpoint Christ's ministry (69 weeks = 27 A.D.) and being cut off in the middle of the week (Spring 31 A.D.). The year-day principle is as sure as the blood of the Cross.

Goldstein has delivered a stunning quality work in this power packed book. It is a "must-have" for bible students as they confront the objections from several fronts. He confronts most of these "latest objections" and make several powerful rebuttals for the 2300 day prophecy and the Pre-advent judgment.

Well written and easy enough to read and understand. Clifford Goldstein, though a well-educated man doesn't across as needing to demonstrate his educational status. He made this book clear and logical, step by step approach to lead to his conclusions in each of the chapters.While he is defending his understanding of Biblical doctrines and prophecies, he remains polite throughout to those who condemned his work in the first place.Kudos to him

The information in this book is really interesting, Cliff seems to have done a good job explaining his position right down to the minutest detail.

Excellent book. Exposes the groundless accusations of people like Dale Ratzlaff against the Biblical doctrine of the judgment. Don't just take Ratzlaff's word for it, read this book to see how cunningly deceptive he really is.
